Bullying Prevention

Bullying Prevention:The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a multilevel, multi-component school-based program designed to prevent or reduce bullying in elementary, middle, and junior high schools (students 6 to 15 years old). The program attempts to restructure the existing school environment to reduce opportunities and rewards for bullying. School staff is largely responsible for introducing and implementing the program. Their efforts are directed toward improving peer relations and making the school a safe and positive place for students to learn and develop. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is also a model program for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, U.S. Department of Justice.

Bullycide: Formed from the words bully, suicide and homicide. It refers to the suicide or killing of a child due to bullying, or a bullying victim seeking fatal revenge against his or her bullies, such as a school shooting. To some victims of bullying, suicide is the only foreseeable relief of the years of emotional, physical and social torment they have experienced. Mental Health professionals are becoming increasingly aware of the link between bullying and suicidal ideation. Now, more than ever, adults need to have a model for intervention at all ecological levels to put an end to the devastating effects to divert children from choosing a permanent solution to what can be a temporary problem because bullying can be stopped.

Child Focus staff have developed the BLSS (pronounced Bliss) Bullying/Suicide Questionnaire for Mental Health Professionals to assess suicide risk in individuals who report bullying. This Bullycide Assessment and corresponding interventions will be submitted for approval through SAMHSA as an evidence-based, best-practice model.

Workplace Bullying: Workplace studies indicate that 1 worker in 6 are bullied in a given year, often by a supervisor. During their Workplace Bullying Training, Butch Losey, MA, PC and Susan Graham, M.Ed, PC will:Describe the phenomenon of bullying in the workplace. Describe how destructive and prevalent bullying is to an organization. Distinguish bullying from other forms of discrimination and violence. Explain research driven profiles of perpetrators, targets and bystanders. Give personal, team and institutional solutions to this problem.
