Training

The Child Focus Training Center provides on and off-site training on a variety of topics to parents, caregivers, child care providers, mental health providers, schools, community agencies, and other community members and will prepare training to fit the needs of individual programs and companies. The Training Center also maintains continuing education provider status to meet license requirements set by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board and by the Ohio Psychological Association.

The film chronicles the story of Kevin Hines, who at age 19 attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Since then Kevin has been on a mission to use his story to help others find recovery and stay alive, and has become the world’s most prominent suicide prevention speaker and advocate. The film also features some of the world’s leading suicide prevention experts and shines light on people who are using personal experiences with suicide to help others find the hope they need to stay alive. Suicide The Ripple Effect Teaser Trailer Bringing people together to view this film and discuss the topic will have a positive impact on reducing the number of suicides and suicide attempts in our community.

Director of Training-Melanie Palmer 

Melanie Palmer is an Independently Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with Supervisory Status and American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Approved Supervisor. She is the Director of Training for Child Focus, Inc, has worked in the outpatient and school-based programs at CFI, and taught a general psychology course at Southwestern College. She has over 20 years experience working with clients on a variety of issues and challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, sexual abuse, marital conflict, and has extensive experience working with children and adolescents suffering from emotional and behavioral problems. Melanie is a certified instructor for Keeping Children Safe: Child Abuse and Neglect Curriculum for Early Childhood Professionals, Stewards of Children Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program and Youth Mental Health First Aid. She is also a certified instructor for QPR, a Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Program, QPRT Suicide Risk Assessment and Management program, QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Instructor's Master Trainer and Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk: Core Competencies for Behavioral Health Professionals (AMSR) Trainer as well as a Crisis Intervention Team trainer. Melanie develops and facilitates trainings on a variety of topics including trauma-informed care, separation and divorce issues, parenting, stress management and self-care, communication, and more. mpalmer@child-focus.org     

Training Center Office Manager-Shelley Drummond started at Child Focus in 1991 in accounts receivable and worked in the fiscal department for 10 years. Shelley then left the agency to pursue a career in property insurance and has taken several courses and exams to receive her Certificate of Insurance and an Associate Underwriter Designation.  Shelley returned to CFI in 2014 as the Training Center Office Manager. Shelley brings her experience of customer service and compassion of community volunteering to Child Focus and is honored to be part of an organization that helps bring hope and healing into our children’s lives.  sdrummond@child-focus.org
